4/21 Insignia- ideas for hotels for Greece?

Our favorite is the Athens Hilton. To get there, you can fight for a cab in the taxi queue when you disembark from the ship, or you can make prearrangements for a driver to meet you at the ship, deliver you to the hotel, and perhaps take you on a scenic tour of Athens before picking you up and dropping you off at the airport the next morning. Or you can take public transportation all the way from Pireaus to the Hilton and then on to the airport.

Several Oceania customers prefer the classic Grand Bretagne on Omonia Square, but we prefer the more sleek and modern Hilton and its chic restaurants. Both hotels are adjacent to a subway station, which you can now take directly to the airport for only 6 Euros (provided you know how to travel light!).

Some cruisers purchase the post-cruise hotel package with attendant transfers, but we don't think we need that level of pampering.

I am one of those who really enjoys the Grand Bretagne. It was completely renovated prior to the Olympics and is part of the Luxury Collection of Starwood Hotels. I have found that surfing the internet has occasionally yielded some good prices on rooms . Our last stay there we overlooked the Acropolis. Plus its location is outstanding. I will admit it probably will be pricier than the Hilton.

Yes, keep checking back. If you find a room at a great rate, book it. If you find a better rate subsequently, book another room at that rate and cancel your other reservation. Note that different Starwood hotels have different cancellation policies to avoid no-show charges. Also, be aware that the online and telephone reservation lines are operated by two separate entities - if you made a reservation on-line, it's best to cancel it in the same fashion - their telephone reservationists don't always cancel the reservation from their system when you call.

Anyone have any websites or information re: getting a private car to pick us up at the port in Greece (after the cruise) & take us to the hotel in Athens?

Search the posts on this board for "George" or "Spiro!"
