st john on own

Our ship will be stopping in st thomas for the day and the last time we were here we did a tour of the island and saw all that we were interested in. We were thinking of popping over to St john and going to the beaches over there. Is it recommended to take a ship tour over, or is it easy enough to just take the ferry over and then get a cab or bus. We'll probably have a group of 9-12 people with kids. I heard that trunk bay beach gets crowded, any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated along with other suggestions of what to do and see here.

I don't know how easy it will be for 9 or 12 but the trip over is easy and there are plenty of cabs/bus available when the ferry docks. We had a tough time getting a cab to take us from the dock to red hook so went from the center of Charlotte Amalie.
