Viking Valley (Near Flam)

Recommended Posts

Has anyone gone on the tour of the Viking Valley?  It apparently is a village/reenactment of life with the Vikings. The company Norway's Best has a shuttle that takes you to the village.  If anyone has done this, could you comment please?  Is it worth it? Is it truly a village that is inhabited or just a reenactment? Any information would be helpful.

Thank you.

It is a reenactment. The Viking age ended around the 11th century, and since the term actually refers to the job, international law now prohibits raiding other countries. If your question is about whether the staff lives on site in period style, no, they go home after work.

The site is located in Gudvangen, which is at the end of the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord, which is too narrow for all but the smallest cruise ships to reach. If they offer a tour that arrives or departs the location by boat, that would be a great addition. It’s quite astonishing how steep and narrow the hills are on either side!

The boat ride from Flam to Gudvagan is reason enough to go. The village is just an added interest. The boat ride is just beautiful, and the bus ride back to Flam is interesting as well. We booked it on our own while in port. There’s a tourist center in the Port of Flam with all kinds of excursions offered. It’s much less exspensive to book it on your own.

I'm thinking of doing the same. I was wondering if it was worth the fees they were charging. Is there and other spots to visit in Gudvangen? How much time do you need there?
