We too wanted to see the observatory.... but when we checked online (did a search) we found their hours for tours were really weird and all over the place.... just couldnt fit it in. (We stayed 2 nights precruise).

Good luck....

We were goofing around the other night on Google Earth and found the observatory !!! Was really neat....zoomed right in. If you go to this site - go to ARECIBO REGION and it is in the bottom left corner.

1. you can rent a car drive east on #22 to #129 and south to 634, there are signs.

2. several tour comapnies go to observatory and caverns for about $80 p/p

2. a private service can also be arrange if you check out this link

I was wondering. Do you actually get to look through the telescope (i.e. are there night tours)?? THAT would be worth a 2 hour drive!!!

63galaxy, This is a radio telescope that receives radio waves, not in the visible spectrum. The huge dish (close to 1000 ft in diameter) is made up of many thousands of panels, which can be focused in groups if the whole dish is not needed for "eavesdropping" at one time on the universe. There are no telescopes like you're envisioning. The dish actually sits inside of a huge sinkhole and the focal points are receiver sitting several hundred feet above the surface. It's impressive, but you'd be disappointed if you're want to "see" the universe.
