kammer Posted July 7, 2006 #1 Share Posted July 7, 2006 When I was in Nassau last month, there was a man doing wood carving near the straw market. He makes walking sticks out of - I think he said Wild Timaron (sp?). My sister said she thought my brother in law would really like one. I'm going back to the Bahamas in the next couple of weeks - does anyone know if I will have any problems getting the wood through customs back in the states? Thanks, Karen

Thanks, Karen You shouldn't have a problem with these hand carved items. They are cured wood and no longer growing. I think the wood is Tamarind.. like the spice. Enjoy your trip! Vmalcolm Posted July 8, 2006 #3 Share Posted July 8, 2006 I've brought back many carved items from Haiti, Jamaica and Mexico, never had a problem. Years ago my dad told me to put them in the freezer for a few days when I get home to kill any possible insects in the wood. Don't know if this is a possibility, but I do know that a broom I store outside got giant bee's in the stick...just bored a hole right into it. Better safe than sorry! Valerie It's definitely a possibility! DBF brought home a hideous carved statue from Jamaica (which went to Goodwill shortly after he became DH) that was full of creepy crawly black bugs! I would insist on freezing or exterminating in some way before displaying in your home!
