Venice - from ship to the hotel?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

my parents (both 71) and I will be doing Med. (Millennium) cruise in October with the last port in Venice. I'd have to fly home the same day but they would like to stay in Venice one more day. Question: How do they get from the ship to the hotel? Which area should they stay considering they speak little English and would have to get back to the airport next day (carrying bags, e.t.c.) on their own? THANK YOU!

This really comes down to a question of money. If you are willing to pay for a water taxi ride from the ship to a hotel with canal access and then another water taxi ride from the hotel to the airport when they are ready to leave, then look for hotels that have water access. The costs for all this will be expensive but will be the least stressful both physically and mentally.

If money is an issue then your choices not as wide. You could try to find them a hotel near the Piazza Roma where they could take a land taxi from the cruise terminal to there and then hopefully be able to roll their luggage from there to the hotel and then repeat the process when they need to go to the airport.

What we did in 2003 was take the Princess transfer to the airport the morning the cruise came in. Then we stored our bigger pieces of luggage at the airport's held luggage office and caught the special airport waterbus back to Venice and our hotel where we stayed for 3 more nights. Then we repeated the process when we were leaving. By only taking back minimal luggage you have a much wider choice of where to get a hotel since you can carry your luggage across the bridges and on the ocassionally not always smooth streets. The big disadvantage of this method is they will lose most of morning making the trip to the airport and then back to Venice.

Here is a great web site with lots of info on Venice.

Also check some of the other posts on the board for hotel recommendations for Venice. There are a lot of options but don't expect to find much for less than $200 or so a night and the price can go up sharply from there depending on location and time of year.

Good luck in finding a solution and have a great next cruise.

Just a quick reminder. Italians speak Italian, so the question is how much Italian your parent speak, not how much English they speak.
