Where to stay in Quebec City?

You definitely want to stay in Vieux Quebec which is the old walled part of the city. It is absolutely amazing and beautiful and very European looking. There are many options for hotels within the walled city and fabulous little bistros and street vendors. The port is 5 minutes away.

Le Chateau Frontenac is quite beautiful and sits at the top of a cliff in the old city.

:D Our budget didn't quite work with Le Chateau last time we went so we stayed here and absolutely loved it:

Have a wonderful time in Quebec City. It's one of my all-time favourite places but definitely don't miss staying in the old city (don't even consider staying by the airport.JMHO:) )

Thank you for the information, I am looking into it. Le Chateau doesn't fit into our budget either. I am hoping to stay in the old city, but so far it looks like it will be too expensive for us.

Anyone else have any hotels to comment on? Would like to hear good and bad, so we know what to stay away from also.

thank you!:)

I definitely know what you mean about the budget:). Quebec City has some really unique very small inns and b & b's though and often they're pretty reasonable relatively speaking. Try this link for researching some of them and many of them also have reviews on Tripadvisor.

Good luck with your search.

ML, we are also cruising out of Quebec City next year. I've been reading about this hotel's history on their website. Quite interesting! Would you mind giving me more information about why you liked it so much? Location? Service? Rooms? Staff? Was it convenient for doing walking tours? Your help is appreciated!

Sure. I'm assuming you're talking about Manoir Victoria. I haven't actually stayed at Chateau Frontenac - only walked through. Here's a map that shows where some of the hotels are located.

I just found it to be a really neat old hotel. Very Victorian looking - lots of old rich wood and colours. The rooms are not posh but they are clean and very large. The pool is really interesting. It's down in the basement and sort of looks like a roman bath. The hotel has a fine dining restaurant and also a cafe. I really liked the location of the hotel and I found the price pretty reasonable for the old city. The address shows it as being on the Cote du Palais (that's the street) but also, if you walk out through the cafe you end up on Rue St. Jean which has lots of really neat shops and cafes. There's an awesome little crepe cafe just down Rue St Jean that is always jammed. We were able to sit at this bar area that surrounds the spot where they make the crepes. It was so yummy and fun. Absolutely everything in the old city is in walking distance from there and there are street vendors and performers just a couple of blocks away and up a hill towards Chateau Frontenac. Everything happens in that area and there are beautiful cafes and shops and cobblestone roads all over the place. My kids said it was the most interesting and beautiful place they'd ever been.

If you have a car when you're there this is a very pretty place to visit as well and only 10 or 12 kms from Quebec City.

If there are any native Quebecers reading I'm sure they can give you more info. I've been a few times with my sister-inlaw who was born in Quebec so that helped us a lot. It's a wonderful city.

Yes, I was asking about the Manoir Victoria, and you have given me just the information I wanted. I have a much better idea now of what to expect of the hotel and the location. The hotel map is also very helpful. And thanks for the tip about the falls. I started to ask you for must-see recommendations but didn't want to ask for too much! No car, but I bet we could arrange a tour. Thanks again for your help. I think we will really enjoy Quebec City.

There is also the Hilton Vieux Québec which is situated just outside the official ''parameters'' of the old city. It is just across the street from ''Les portes d'arches'' which are the entryway to Le Vieux Québec.

It is not a ''cheap'' hotel but it is definitly not as expensive as Le Château Frontenac. It is a very nice hotel. Ask for a room overlooking the old city. The views of the port, old city and Château Frontenac are exceptional.

By the way ... October is probably the greatest time of the year to be travelling there because of all the colors you will get to see in the trees.

Have fun !!! :)

We stayed at the charming Hotel Des Coutellier in the basse ville section of the old city last October. It was a wonderful small hotel at the end of the street of art galleries in the lower village. The great thing about it was it was at the back entrance of the walls to the upper part of the city and although it was a healthy walk to the upper town it was nothing like the climb in the area where the funicular is. The rates were very reasonable and each morning a hamper is hung from the doornob on the outside of your room containing your breakfast. All you have to do is open your door and have your breakfast any time that you want! Their website is http://www.hoteldescoutellier.com The staff was also very friendly.

Last summer I stayed at the "Holiday Inn Select - Downtown Quebec City" and it was a very nice hotel. As I recall, the rate was a bit more than $100/night.

It's outside of the Vieux Quebec section, but you can take a bus. Then after taking the bus I was able to figure out how to walk to the old city. It's a bit of a walk, but doable. The downtown area where the hotel is, is interesting too.

This Holiday Inn Select was more upscale than what you might expect from a Holiday Inn in the US. I was very pleased with it.
