Lighthouses?

Ahoy!

I am from New England but have never done a lighthouse tour.

Will we be close enough to the coast to actually SEE Lighthouses from our ship? Or only as we come into ports?

What is the best port to view lighthouses?

I am thinking of doing a Lighthouse tour that is offered from the ship.

No problem around Portland. If I am not mistaken, the main shipping channel here takes you by Cape Elizabeth Light (known as Two Lights around here), then Portland Head and Ram Ledge Light about 30 minutes out of Portland Harbor. Spring Point will be at the entrance to the harbor and Bug Light is in Portland Harbor. There are many places in the area where you can view multiple lights.

Given your itinerary, I'm glad to see that rfischel1 responded to your question.:)

 

I had thought perhaps you were heading east from NY thru Long Island Sound to RI (Newport) and on thru Vineyard Sound to Martha's Vineyard (Oak Bluffs). We generally stay in the channels when we boat in that area and I've gotten great pictures of many lighthouses. It sounds from rfischel1's post that there are many lighthouses visible as well on a Northern New England itinerary.

 

Your library may have books on lighthouses you could check against your ports. There are a couple on New England Lighthouses by Ray Jones.
