Verizon on islands

We are leaving in a couple of weeks for the Bahamas. Has anyone has any luck with Verizon Wireless on Freeport or Nassau? They have a good rate, at $3.99 a month and 9 cent a minute for International calls. I was just wondering if I should sign up. They aren't exactly sure where it does pick up, but assured me some cruisers have bragged it picks up on different islands.
