First time to Ft. Lauderdale...need to find a hotel pre and post cruise

We are sailing on Princess Feb. 24 2007 and have never been to Ft. Lauderdale. Would like to stay downtown or close to shopping. Have heard about the River walk... is it worth seeing? What should we see and where would be the best place to stay? Our 18yr.D.D. will be with us. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Also, can anyone tell me when spring break is next year? Thanks.
