Where Celebrity docks: Cork, Dublin, Cornwall?

Hi Folks,

Does anybody know where Celebrity ships, or other cruise ships, dock (or anchor & tender) for the ports of Cornwall, Dublin, and Cork?

Somewhere in the Falmouth Harbor makes sense for Cornwall, but making sense doesn't always mean much! (And Falmouth Harbor is actually one of the largest harbors in the world).

Somebody mentioned that the Titanic Museum is "right next to" where we dock in Cork; but the Titanic Museum seems to actually be in Cobh, some little distance away from Cork City (although it is in Cork County).

Does anybody know of a web site that answers such questions? Cruise Critic seems to have VERY LITTLE on these ports!

Thanks - Jon

You don't dock in Cork; Cobh IS THE port for ships calling on Cork. There is no dedicated Titanic Museum; there is the "Queenstown Story" - which is a museum about the enormous wave of emigrants who sailed from Cobh, info on the Lusitania, the Titanic, etc. This is, indeed, "right next to" where you dock in Cobh - it's in the former railway station.

Here's a website I found - we did not do this walking tour but it sounds very interesting -

The town is a pretty sight from your ship. Pastel buildings and the spire of a cathedral high above the harbor.

I wasn't sure where your ship docked, but was also going to suggest the walking tour - Titanic Trail!:)

Other places to visit would be Blarney Castle, to kiss the stone. Blarney is 5 miles from Cork City and there is also the Blarney Woollen Mills complex next to the castle with its shop, pub and cafe.

Kinsale is a lovely harbour town 20 miles from Cork City with many good restaurants, pubs, and art and craft shops.

Yes, Falmouth is the Cornish port-of-call for Celebrity ships. Falmouth Harbour is one of the largest (& most scenic) harbors in the world--but oddly enough, it is a tender port. As I recall (having been there on a number of occasions, but always arriving there by land--most recently in autumn 2003), there are several drydocks but no ship terminal per se.

The south coast of Cornwall has numerous coves & creeks, my personal favorite being the Fowey estuary. Smallish cruise ships (e.g., Olsen's Black Prince) occasionally put into Fowey (or rather, anchor in the River Fowey), but only Falmouth is deep enough & has sufficient facilities to handle large vessels such as the Constellation.

Incidentally, the itinerary originally posted for the Constellation's eastbound transatlantic last spring called for the ship to stop at Plymouth; however, several months before the voyage, this was changed to Le Havre, without any explanation. Plymouth of course has a large harbor & is a major naval base; on the Devon side of the River Tamar, it's close enough to Cornwall to allow passengers to make shore excursions into Cornwall. Falmouth is more attractive, however.

For Dublin, I believe the ship docks at a wharf right at the mouth of the Liffey, two or three miles from the center of Dublin.

The other posters are of course correct about Cobh being the port for Cork, and about "The Queenstown Story" museum there. A quick Google search will bring up a useful website for Cobh, with some photos that give a good idea of what the place looks like.

Cheers,

John,

landlocked in chilly New Jersey
