Refundable V NonRefundable Onboard Credit?

Okay, one more question. On our Conquest cruise the $400 onboard credit they gave us due to the Katrina cruise cancellation was labelled nonrefundable, meaning we had to "use it or lose it", and it wasn't available for use in the casino. So we've got another $400 credit on our upcoming Fantasy cruise, and we're expecting the same rules to apply.

Well, I had also contacted the TA a few weeks ago about the cruise fare being about HALF what it was when we booked 14 months ago, and I never heard back from him. I checked online through the TA's site today, and apparently Carnival is giving us a $389 shipboard credit to compensate us for the overpayment. SO being that it will be nearly impossible for us to use the original $400, are there different rules for this sort of credit? If any of you have received credits due to price decreases, were you able to cash it out at the end?

I just want to be prepared and know what to expect. I've been told completely wrong information at the purser's desk so many times that I honestly don't want to wait and ask THEM if I'll be getting that money back if I don't use it!

Thanks for your help!

icon7.gif Just returned Sunday, from Victory Thanksgiving cruise. There were eleven of us,and we recieved $302.20 per person O.B.C. On the last night of the cruise we went to the pursers deck and recieved cash for the difference between O.B.C. and what we spent. Hope this helps. (p.s. They also deducted the $70.00 gratuity from O.B.C.)icon14.gif

OBC given for a "loss" like missing a port, or if they have to cancel the cruise etc, etc, typically is non-refundable and must be used on board. OBC that is given as part of a price adjustment should be available to cash out.

I would say splurge and have fun, do the excursions that you always thought were too expensive, get you and your spouse a nice half day in the spa, buy a nice ring or watch at the half price sale etc. etc.

Thanks. I'm going to assume I have to "blow" that $400 on fun expenditures on the ship, but the additional $389 I'm getting for the price adjustment is something I would LOVE to get back on the last night - because the "splurging" I REALLY want to do involves booking another cruise as soon as we return home :)

That is a great splurge, you have nothing to lose either way, just make sure you confirm with the pursers desk which amount is which, I know that the non-refundable gets used first, so that is not a problem!

Thanks so much for your help. I will definitely confirm with the purser's desk, but I wanted to ask some of you who are IN THE KNOW before relying on their possibly-wrong information once onboard.

The only thing that stinks in this situation is that I also paid for my inlaws' cruise, and THEY will be getting an extra $240 OBC due to my overpayment of the cruise fare. I know it's selfish, but I would love to have use of that money for our next cruise. Oh well, you can't win 'em all!

Just tell them that it is a refund from your overpayment, let them offer to give it back, and if they don't, no big deal...
