Driving to LA

We are sailing on NCL Star on 3/14 and plan to drive to LA from Tucson on the 13th. Can't figure which would be better

I-10 which is shorter distance but goes through Phoenix, Sun City and most all of LA, or

1-8 to San Diego and then head north. Distance is longer but nothing until you hit San Diego.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, spending the night of the 13th in San Pedro. We will probably take I-10 to the dock. We are spending 4 nights in Carlsbad after the cruise and returning to Tucson via I-8 so it will be interesting to compare the two later.

Thanks for the response.
