Lock valuables in car or take to beach?

We are planning several snorkel stops on our visit to the islands in April. I've heard all about the vehicle break-ins. I was planning on taking a credit card and my drivers licence only ashore and carrying those in a water proof wallet that can go in the water with me. Would my camera be safer on the beach in a bag with me or in the car locked up? My wife and I don't want to snorkel by ourself because one has to watch the beach bag. Do bags get ripped off from the beach? Thanks for any input.

Rick
