Passports Necessary?

I just wanted to see if anyone recently went on a cruise without a passport and just provided a picture ID and Birth Certificate. I read that it's not required yet and I wanted to make sure.

Thanks!

While passports aren't required for cruising there are problems that could arise. If you get sick out of the country and have to fly home the airlines will require you to have a passport to get back into the United States. That is why Carnival strongly urges passengers to carry passports.

Thanks for posting this, I just found out today that DH's military passport is not valid for unofficial travel and we leave in four weeks!!:( We'll just have to bring his birth certificate this time and get him a civilian passport later. :)
