Mercury Outside Cabins Recommendations

Recommended Posts

I have found quite a few recommendations for SS or CC cabins on Mercury but none for Outside Cabins.

Any particular decks or specific cabins that you liked or disliked? We were going to get a 2A veranda, but they are all sold out--for Alaska June 2008! The prices for the SVs, CCs, and SSs are quite a jump from the outside cabins. We are going with a large group and probably won't spend enough time in our cabin to justify the price difference.

So we decided to book an outside cabin and hope a 2A becomes available. Those of you who are experienced cruisers, how often do categories of cabins become available that have once been sold out? And what is the best way to watch for these?

We've never had anything but OV and even on the lower levels they have been fine. But last Jan. on our first Mercury cruise, we had 4029 and there was a lot of engine noise--very unexpected. The cabin seemed to be smaller, too because there was just a single chair and tiny table in the sitting area instead of the loveseat and coffee table we'd always had. We adjusted by moving the vanity chair over to the table when necessary. The other difference is that the bed was in front of the window, like on the RCCL ships. The other X ships (Galaxy and Summit) had the beds along the side wall so we could look out the window without kneeling on the bed. I like that arrangement better. On Summit, a larger ship we were on the lowest level and on Galaxy we were on the 8th deck.

On our next cruise in Jan, also on Mercury we have a 4th deck cabin but in a different area which the cruise sales rep said would be quiet.

We haven't been able to bring ourselves to pay the extra $$ for a balcony, let alone CC or a suite. We'd rather spend the money on excursions, souvenirs and other extras. Probably if we ever got a free upgrade we'd be doomed.
