gabbyg Posted August 29, 2007 #1 Share Posted August 29, 2007 Hello we are traveling next month on the Carnival Ledgend and would like to know if there are any nice ruins close by either at this port or cozemel ? we have heard that the ruins sometimes are a long distance from certain ports. Thanks in advance Donna
KroozFoolz Posted August 30, 2007 #2 Share Posted August 30, 2007 Just starting researching this a bit myself, but here is what I have found so far. Xcambo - was a salt and salted fish distribution center - less than 30 minutes away, near the coast and near the road from Progreso to Telchac Puerto http://www.yucatantoday.com/destinations/eng-xcambo.htm Dzibilchaltun, one of the most important ceremonial centers of the Mayan world - 30 minute ride from the pier http://www.yucatantoday.com/destinations/eng-dzibilchaltun.htm http://www.mayasites.com/dzibilch.html Uxmal, considered one of the most beautiful cities in the Mayan world - 2½ hour drive http://www.yucatantoday.com/destinations/eng-uxmal.htm http://www.mayasites.com/uxmal.html Chichen Itza, one of the most important archeological sites on the American continent and once home of the great Mayan Empire - 2½ hour bus ride away http://www.yucatantoday.com/destinations/eng-chichen-itza.php http://www.mayasites.com/chichen.html Yucatan Map http://www.yucatantoday.com/maps/eng-yucatan-map.htm As for Cozumel - San Gervasio - on Cozumel - 11 miles from San Miguel de Cozumel and the downtown ferry pier - was a site dedicated to the Mayan goddess Ixchel ("She of the Rainbows"), deity of midwifery, fertility, medicine and weaving. http://www.mayasites.com/gervasio.html http://www.mayasites.com/sitelist.html

hdawson Posted August 30, 2007 #4 Share Posted August 30, 2007 In reality, I think you will find Uxmal about one and a half hour drive and to me the most impressive, prettiest and least crowded.
KroozFoolz Posted August 30, 2007 #5 Share Posted August 30, 2007 In reality, I think you will find Uxmal about one and a half hour drive and to me the most impressive, prettiest and least crowded. Thanks for the correction and all the excellent information and advice you share here about the Progreso area. I thought I had read Uxmal is closer to Progreso than Chichen Itza is, but the Carnival shore excursion description says a "scenic 2½ hour drive," so I went with that. gabbyg Posted August 30, 2007 Author #7 Share Posted August 30, 2007 Hey Thank you for all the great info, I am now looking forward to progreso. I understand that the pier is 4.5 miles long so are the taxies lined up at the ship? Also how do you get to Uxmal, and what can we expext to pay per person? Is American money ok or should we get it exchanged? Thanks so much for all the great help Donna
margincall Posted September 9, 2007 #8 Share Posted September 9, 2007 I know that Uxmal shore excursion description says that there is a lot of walking. Are there places to rest along the way and is it constant walking or standing. We sometimes have problems with that but would love to see this sight
adamsmom Posted September 10, 2007 #9 Share Posted September 10, 2007 There are nice, air-conditioned courtesy buses that take you from the shops near the ship into town. You might have to wait a few minutes for one to come along. I would like to find the bus stop/station in Progreso--does anyone have an address or directions? The last time we were there, we couldn't find it, and the people that we asked kept saying that there was no bus, we had to buy a tour.
