jake54321 Posted October 4, 2007 #1 Share Posted October 4, 2007 Hi, Can any of you well informed, former CY Villa guests, let me know if smoking is allowed in the CY area? Thanks Much, Jake
marilynd Posted October 4, 2007 #2 Share Posted October 4, 2007 On the Pearl in April there were several smokers in the Courtyard area. We just returned from the Pacific Coastal cruise in a Courtyard Villa. There were no smokers outside with me this cruise. I did notice that there were ashtrays on the tables. jake54321 Posted October 4, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted October 4, 2007 Thanks Marilynd, I was just wondering, as I dont like to smoke in the cabin, so at least I will be allowed to smoke in the CY area. Jake
watchdiva Posted October 5, 2007 #4 Share Posted October 5, 2007 Hi Jake: You can smoke in the CY if you choose to do so. I smoke and on our Pearl cruise in April (Marilynd and I were on the same cruise), there were several other smokers using the CY also. With that being said, however, as a courtesy I always inquire whether the smoke will be a problem for anyone in the near vicinity or move to an area where there are no loungers. brunolvr Posted October 5, 2007 #5 Share Posted October 5, 2007 From reading NCL's new smoking rules, it sounds like smoking would not be allowed in the Courtyard area, except in your courtyard cabin or on your balcony. Wouldn't the Courtyard be considered a "public area"? "We want you to be comfortable on board, so public areas throughout all NCL ships are smoke free. If you smoke cigarettes, you can do so in your stateroom, on your balcony, in the casino or Cigar Bar (where available). If you prefer pipes or cigars, you can smoke in the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge. Also, you can smoke cigarettes, pipes and cigars outside on open decks (just not around food venues, sport decks, kids’ pool areas and other designated non-smoking areas)." jake54321 Posted October 5, 2007 Author #6 Share Posted October 5, 2007 Thanks Diva, My mom taught me right, always have courtsey and always be a gentleman !!! And I think Brunolvr is wrong ,the CY area is "private" ,and I would think it would be thought of as smoking by the "public" pool, which I know you still can do. Soon all us smokers will be huddled in a corner, or worse, be made to "Walk The Plank". LOL Thanks for all your help. Jake

Jake I think it would be fine to allow smoking in the Courtyard if the roof is open. (Not at breakfast though, please, as that can really spoil a meal for non-smokers or, at least, not within the dining areas.) With the roof closed, it can get quite stuffy and closed in. The smoke would simply remain in the Courtyard area, drift into the passageways, and definitely concentrate in the confined/closed spaces. That is, IMO, completely unfair to non-smokers. If the roof is open, the smoke has somewhere to go. So perhaps one side could be smoking and one side non whenever the roof is open. beachchick
jake54321 Posted October 6, 2007 Author #8 Share Posted October 6, 2007 Beachchick, I agree, I would not even think of smoking if the roof was closed or people were eating, that's why I don't smoke in the cabin. I, a smoker, don't like to be around the smell of smoke when I am eating. I am sure there is some happy medium, maybe the sun deck? Whatever the situation, my friends and I will of course ask anyone around before lighting up. Jake
watchdiva Posted October 6, 2007 #9 Share Posted October 6, 2007 The CY isn't really considered a "public space" - Deck 14 (Pearl) cannot be accessed without a special key card. I would call it more of a common space to those in the Courtyard Villas and AA's. Let's not turn this into an anti-smoking tirade about what is fair/unfair, etc. If everyone is respectful of everyone else, there IS no problem. If you're referring to my post, I don't see where there is an "anti-smoking tirade." You don't see any issue of fairness, whereas in regard to the Courtyard, which is the subject of this specific thread, I do. The Courtyard is unlike any other common area on the ship. Of course people should be respectful to each other. That is not what's in question. I wrote what I thought, in my opinion, would be reasonable. The Courtyard can be extremely confined when the roof is closed, and smoke would have nowhere to go because the Courtyard becomes an enclosed, indoor space. When the roof is open, of course it's like any other outdoor area. I guess what I mean to say is that when the roof is closed it is not the same as the outdoor decks, but when the roof is open, it is. That's why I think there should be the dual regulation. beachchick
