Well it says it is going to be larger than the Queen Victoria, I'm guessing it is going to be Spirit/Vista Class Phase II. So it could be a completely new design that Costa is using, and Cunard has inherited the Luminsoa's sister ship. Seeing how 2010 is not that far away in a ship design timeline, and unless they have been keeping the design planning under wraps so people wouldn't find out they were selling the QE2, then I am guessing it is only a slightly modified design of the Costa Luminosa.

At least there's a bit of foredeck and a nice® front profile on the Vistas. QE2 she isn't, but she's not too bad compared to the Luminosa/"Carnival Crapstiny" monstrosity.

The "attack of the pencil sharpener" should take on the Queen Anne name if it isn't going to be modified enough to look properly Cunard, IMO. Leave Elizabeth for the next worthy LINER that deserves a flagship name, before you slap it on this horrid hull.

 

As I think I said before, it's a pretty stupid idea to name your ships out of a pool of four. No wonder they have to reuse "Elizabeth" before QE2's even into her final year. There's lots of things that end in "-ia."

Elizabeth should be the same or similar as the Luminosa but in Cunard Colors and Luminosa is basically the QV with extra cabins added (Eurodam style) and not like that Concordia picture. After all QE is going to be a panamax, not post panamax.

Here's some more details on the Costa Luminosa and sister ship - Queen Elizabeth.

 

MIAMI, FL, Oct 9 – Costa, Europe’s Number One Cruise Line, laid the keel for the thirteenth ship in its fleet late last week at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard. Due for delivery in Spring 2009, the Costa Luminosa will be 92,700-tons, 292 meters long and offer a double occupancy of 2,260. The ship will boast a new design concept combining the very best of the brand including wellness, entertainment, food and wine, exclusive itineraries, and fine art. In addition, it will feature the highest number of veranda accommodations (68%) in the fleet. In particular, 772 of 1,130 cabins will be in this category, making the ship especially well suited for scenic itineraries.

 

Onboard, the ship will showcase the latest innovations from Costa, including the Samsara Spa, which is one of the largest wellness centers at sea, complete with accommodations featuring direct access to the spa. It will also feature a pool deck with a retractable magrodome extending over two pools and a Grand Prix race car driving simulator. In addition, the Costa Luminosa will feature an 18-hole championship golf course simulator.

 

Costa will also build a sister ship to the Costa Luminosa, scheduled to enter service in March 2010. Both ships will be created at a total cost of over 800 million Euros.

No one knows what Luminosa will look like as there are no definitive images issued by Costa or Carnival (only hearsay). It appears however that this is a 'new class' of ship for Costa (but based on the Vista hull) - so expect a slightly larger version of QV (2,000 tons larger is only 2%!!!). Presumably QE will be similar but again adapted to Cunard 'liner' interiors and layout.

 

Why does everyone keep harking back to the past? The first QE was designed and built 70 years ago and QE2 over 40 years ago - neither could provide the facilities expected by a new generation of people wanting to take cruises. Cunard are giving the public what they want - otherwise it's financial suicide!!!

 

Why would Cunard produce another 'true' liner which sails on scheduled line voyages from port A to port B - when there is no call for another one? We keep hearing that QM2 struggles to fill some transatlantics and most CC's are saying we want to cruise to here, cruise to there!!! Are you expecting Cunard to spend huge amounts of additional money to produce a one off external design for no other reason than she should look like a 'liner' when it will have no effect at all on the interiors nor the 'cruise' experience?

 

I think we should be glad that Cunard have survived at all and that they are expanding a fleet fit for 21st century cruising (and crossing).
