Opinion needed on Gem AD-Romance

I need some suite advice. Since we are booking our next cruise so early we have our choice of suites. The balconies on the corner suites and 30 square feet smaller, but you have the luxury of a corner suite. A picture is below of the 4 Romance Suites on the Gem. Anyone have any suggestions?

We are in 10166 on Jade's trans-Atlantic next fall, and our friends are in 10164. That said, I have no idea of the difference. Why do you think a corner suite is a "luxury?"

We were in Jewel's equivalent of 10168 last fall and the balcony was enormous, seating four comfortably for cards with lots of room to spare. I wouldn't worry about the difference between 100sf and 80sf, other than bragging rights.

Wow, you dont waste any time! Thanks for the fast reply. I guess like an end unit on a house, a corner suite seems more desireable. So far I have gotten along well with the neighbors I have had in the past, but I have read some horror stories on here about neighbors. I ALSO dont want to be one of those neighbors. Depending on my luck in the casino there are nights that I dont get back to my room until very late. I am always respectful to keep it down if my neighbors are asleep, but there is 1 less neighbor to worry about in a corner room. I didnt think 30 square feet is a big deal, and the last thing I am looking to do is brag. If you had 4 people on your balcony and you were still comfortable thats more then enough for us.

We have found that, for some reason, when we cruise the Aft., cabins, there are much FEWER passengers out on their decks compared to when we cruise a Fwd., cabin.

I'm not sure why that is - time of year was summer and fall.

We've cruised the same seasons Fwd., and the balconies always had passengers on them.

I think you would be happy with either choice...I would go with the larger balcony:)

We had cabin #10666 on the Star last year(Nov 2006) and we had cabin #10164 on the Pearl this past Nov 2007. In all honesty, I could not tell the difference between the two cabins except that you could look around the corner on the Pearl. I think both cabins were great. The DW loved the aft cabins because of the wind (lack there of) and we could leave our cabin door open at night.

We have sailed on the Dawn in the AFT corn AD's twice and booked again in June. They are our favorite suites of any we have stayed in. Mostly due to being in the corner. You are a bit out of the way in the hallway so there tends to be far less traffic out there. Being in the corner you only have a neighbor on one side. Also, you can look around the side of the balcony and sometimes, on the Dawn, they'll open your partition door so you can use the side balcony area. Being on the AFT means far less wind than being up front or on the side. The constant sound of the churning water below from the wake is very relaxing. On the Dawn there was the added pleasure of those great smells coming from the bakery in the evenings. Never had a soot problem as some people have mentioned. You will love the AD's and I'd take the corner one.

Let me start by thanking EVERYONE for there opinions and experiences! I think at this point you have all convinced me on doing the corner suite. My question now is since we will be docked in Nassau overnight I would like to pick the corner suite that will be closest to land. Does anyone know what side of the ship docks closest to land in Nassau? It would be either room 10164 or 10664.

Once again thanks for ALL the help!

Since you have the choice of suites, are you avoiding room 10666 because of the number? We did! :) We're sailing in April, so can't give any advice yet.

Ha, we are not that superstitious, but I know a lot of people are. A number of hotels do not have a 13th floor. There are even some hotels that do not have a room 13. Landlords are either superstitious or don't want the hassle of not being able to rent out those rooms. Have a safe and fun upcoming trip!

Thanks,

Brian

Ok, I have switched my room to a corner suite. Thank you again for your suggestions and help!

I have one last question (for now). Judging by the pictures of the AFT on the Gem it looks like the balconies for the Romance suites on deck 10 sit out further then the balconies above you on deck 11. Does this mean when the guests on deck 11 are out on their balcony they can look right down onto the balcony of the romance suite?

Thanks

Yes, they can look down. But the "covered" part of deck 10 balconies is the same size as the entire balcony on decks 8, 9, and 11. The "uncovered" part of deck 10 balconies is essentially bonus space if you choose to use it. You will have as much "private" space on your deck 10 balcony as you would on any of the other decks at the stern. Another way to look at it is that the sliding door to deck 10 balconies is directly under the sliding door to deck 11 balconies, but the balcony railing is two or three feet further astern, giving you a much bigger balcony.
