bobthek Posted March 19, 2008 #1 Share Posted March 19, 2008 We will be arriving in Cherbourg, France at about 10:00 AM and want to visit Bayeux for the day. The ship leaves at 10:00 PM. I would like to rent a car for the day, but the rental offices seem to close at 6:30 PM, which will not leave us much time to tour the area. Another option seems to be the train, but the schedule seems to limit the time available at Bayeux. Does anyone have a suggestion about how to see the area? The ship does not offer an excursion to Bayeux, or even the D-day beaches from this port.
eh2zed Posted March 20, 2008 #2 Share Posted March 20, 2008 We rented a car in Cherbourg, went to Juno Beach, had lunch at Courseilles sur Mer, went to Bayeux and saw the tapestry and then to Caen to see the Peace Memorial. Then we returned to the Cherbourg, returned the car and walked through the downtown a bit before we went back to the ship. It all took about 8 hours. We were able to start earlier than your itinerary allows but we left around 6 pm. The Europcar (National) office is about a 10 minute walk from the pier. First I would ask Europcar what you can do for a late return. They may have a charge but it may be worth it. Another alternative is to search for a private guide. There has been discussion on this for Cherbourg previously.
