Spending Money Ashore

First cruise ever soon to Eastern Caribbean. What's the best way to buy stuff on shore excursions? Debit card, credit card, cash? Any problems encountered with fraud on debit/credit cards?

We always use a credit card. We were told you get a better exchange rate and if things go bad you can dispute it.

We always take small bills in U.S. currency when ashore in the Eastern Caribbean. No need for conversion, they are happy to accept U.S.

For larger purchases, such as in a jewelry store, we usually take along our credit card. That also is not converted but charged in U.S. dollars.
