El San Juan Hotel and Casino (prev known as Wyndam) - Your comments?

Has anyone recently stayed at the El San Juan Hotel and Casino (previous Wyndam)? If so, what was your experience? I was assigned this hotel through Hotwire for $150/night. Will be staying 1 night pre-cruise. I've read the reviews in TripAdvisor and others but I can't find any reviews by CruiseCritic members.

Nice place, totally redone since Wyndham, rooms are small and older, lobby is classic with a great bar and cigar lounge. Best casino in San Juan. Very nice pool and beach.

 

Drinks and food are very expensive. Expect to pay $8 - $9 for a mixed drink.

 

It's very nice but there are other properties I might consider before the El San Juan. I prefer the Intercontinental next door. For couples doing pre cruise The Water Club is great. For families, maybe the Embassy Suites.

Based on comments from CruiseCritic members, I had hoped Hotwire would give me the Intercontinental or Marriott Stellaris and was surprised to receive the El San Juan. My first choice would have been the Sheraton Old San Juan, across from the pier but I'll have to suck it up and go with the El San Juan.
