We took the train from the port to Rome as part of an excusion last december. One of the people from our ship was robbed. One guy standing on the train just before the stop at rome dropped some coins on the floor next to the seated american. The guy seated bent over to help the guy pick up his coins, as he did a second guy reached behind the seated guy and lifted his backpack which was on the seat next to him. The crook put the backpack on and walked off the train . As the seated guy looked up he saw a very familiar backpack leaving the tain. He lost a few bucks, some crdit cards AND HIS PASSPORT. He spent the Entire day at the US EMBASY. We were in Rome six months before on another trip and a pickpocket got several people in one tour group.

We had no problem in three trips in the last 18 months BUT be very careful in Rome.

Amen.... Rome is horrible. Also want to add buses to the list of where people should be mindful. My brother got his pocket picked on a crowded bus. A gypsy couple hit him. The guy cornered him and the girl picked him. Fortunately  .....it was only cash money. So he did not have to worry about credit cards or passports. :)
