Calypso anyone

Recommended Posts

Just booked the Calypso for the 5th May Black Sea resorts, anyone done the trip? Wondering what the dress code is on formal nights, and the general decorum of the ship.Any recomended sights in the resorts not to miss. Did Istanbul last October on the Costa Serena, looking forward to another day there. Whats the best for exchanging currency, local or on board ship, or will they take the euro ? Thanks in anticipation

Hi- we did this trip last year. On formal nights a suit and tie would fit in well, there was a smattering of just shirts, and quite a few djs.

For currency we just had euros with us. An agent came on board to change money in Nessebar, and I think in Constanta. In Sevastopol there were money change facilities just by the dock which is right in town. We went on a trip, Crimean war, and had to get some money for photo charges at the Panorama museum. This was definitely a "don't miss", it was amazing. Not too far from town, so you could do it independently, but the rest of the trip was really good as well.

In Istanbul most places will take euros, but some places like Hagia Sofia needed lire, or at least we were told they did but the entrance price boards did mention euros. You always need a little local money for refreshments or small purchases, though many places took euros and gave change in local. There was an interesting mix of culture (lectures, plays etc) and entertainment (quizzes, bingo, shows) on this trip. It's no luxury liner, and you certainly know you are on a ship, but it has all the essential ingredients, and it's a truly friendly ship at all levels.

I haven't been on Celebration or Spirit, but can definitely say it was better than the Destiny! (Didn't like Destiny too much). It was clean and bright, the layouts seem to vary a lot- we had parallel twin beds, one was on the outside wall, but not fixed. TV (on table), ice bucket, bathroom was good- plenty of space, nice fittings. We had a superior outside but there didn't seem much "superior" about it except for the window. We've had better (Island Star, Emerald) and worse (Destiny, I Escape)
