Mary,

Depending how long you have in port. When we were on the "Paradise" in 2003, they advised us that some of the best beaches were to be found in Anse A L'Ane, which is the resort area across the bay from Fort de France. It's a little passenger ferry you take that leaves Fort de France (d'twn) and takes about 25 mins. Beaches are a short walk from the ferry terminal in L'Anse.

Don't know about chairs etc.

If you want to do a really interesting tour, see if there's a tour that takes you to "Les Jardins Botaniques" or the Botanical Gardens, located in the mountains behind Fort de France. Martinique is very humid once you get off the water with a relative humidity well in the 90%s. In the rain forest it's a constant 99-100% humidity and when it rains (and it does) it's like being in a warm shower...but good tour see lots of beautiful plantrs and birds and a stop (usually) at L'Eglise, a replica of the basilica in Paris, yet not as ornate as a result of the economy in Martinique.

Ciap for now, and enjoy.
