mare s. Posted July 17, 2008 #1 Share Posted July 17, 2008 Would like to do the floating market/tiger temple one day tour in Bangkok. A couple of tour operators have been mentioned on this Board...any special recommendations?
eqr Posted July 17, 2008 #2 Share Posted July 17, 2008 A couple of years ago, we used www.tourwithtong.com. Reliable and flexible with the itinerary. BTW, I believe there's a controversy surrounding the tigers at the temple. A watch group put a report out saying that the tigers aren't rescued from the wild; that they were actually obtained by illegal trading in the black market. Klongmaster Posted July 19, 2008 #3 Share Posted July 19, 2008 Bear in mind that Kanchanaburi province is a long way from the port, so there's a fair bit of 'van time' involved. This site seems to cover all the things you want to do though. http://bangkokdaytours.com/Kanchanaburi/FloatingMarketTigerTemple.html As for the controversy, it's not new. People have varying opinions. Best you go and form an opinion for yourself.
mare s. Posted July 19, 2008 Author #4 Share Posted July 19, 2008 Thanks...we're going to be in Bangkok for a couple of days pre-cruise, so it'll be easier for us to get to Tiger Temple. We contacted Bangkok Day Tours and received an immediate response...they answered our questions promptly, and we went ahead and booked. I'll post my thoughts about the place (and the tour) when we return.
CassCruise Posted July 20, 2008 #5 Share Posted July 20, 2008 mare s. would love to know your thoughts on your return - something we want to do in November but like you have heard very mixed reports and certainly wouldn't want to support it if the animals are mistreated - just can't imagine Buddist monks condoning mistreatment........ mare s. Posted July 20, 2008 Author #6 Share Posted July 20, 2008 My feelings exactly...I've heard some distressing reports about abuse of elephants and won't be going on any elephant rides, but can't imagine Buddhist monks mistreating any animal... helga38 Posted August 3, 2008 #7 Share Posted August 3, 2008 The tiger temple was amazing-we went there a few years ago-still have the pics of us patting tigers-a wonderful highlight. They are tame, but really only (imho) because the Monk was there-he can do anything with them. We went by ordinary bus to Kanchanburi, and stayed a couple of days. Area interesting:the Burma-Thai railway, the cematery of many of the priisoners and also the museum. We went with a tour group from the Township, and it was very good helga.
