Has Anyone Been To Hohhot, China?

DH and I are sailing on the Diamond Princess from Bangkok to Beijing on March 14, 2009 and will spend about 10 days in China postcruise. We have been to China four times previously but have not been to the eastern seaboard area for 20 years. DH speaks Mandarin so we will have no language problems and feel comfortable touring by ourselves. We fly home from Shanghai.

 

I originally thought we would go to Xian from Beijing but my dh is not keen. We want to go someplace that is interesting and hopefully still has maintained some local culture and is easy to get to on the train line - so I thought of Hohhot. After our visit to the Beijing area, we will take the train to Shanghai.

 

If not Hohhot, any other suggestions. Thanks all
