HKM Posted August 24, 2008 #1 Share Posted August 24, 2008 Has anyone ever gone from Dover to Windsor, either by private tour or public transport? How long does it take? Is it even possible?
Shadowstar Posted August 25, 2008 #2 Share Posted August 25, 2008 We went from SLough which is next to Windsor to Dover. It took 1 1/2 hours by private taxi.
handfordr Posted August 25, 2008 #3 Share Posted August 25, 2008 You cannot go direct by public transport from Dover to Windsor. Windsor is about 15 minutes from London Heathrow airport. Its about 2 hours by vehicle from Dover to Windsor or Heathrow. People like Eddie Manning or FCMBS who are based near Heathrow do private transfer/tours where they will pick you up from Dover with luggage and drop you at Windsor Castle leaving your luggage on the van. As they are local they don't charge waiting time so you can stay as long as you want in Windsor before being picked up and taken to the terminal or hotel at Heathrow. You could also take the cruise bus to Heathrow or take the train/Underground to Heathrow via Central London. At Heathrow there are left luggage kiosks at each terminal and there are local buses that run to Windsor Castle taking about 45-60 minutes from Heathrow or 15 minutes in a taxi. You do not need a guide for Windsor Castle (they are banned unless they have a special Windsor creditation). You get a free audio tour device with admission. Most people take about 2 hours to go around the Castle, but Windsor and Eton on the other side of the River Thames are worth at least a day. By public transport to Windsor from Dover without Heathrow takes about 3 hours by train. Get one of the Charing Cross trains from Dover and get off at Waterloo East. Walk across the road to Waterloo where the Windsor trains start. Its a 10 minute and 6/7 GBP taxi ride from the cruise terminal to Dover Priory Station
