Costa Maya review/waverunner rental December 24, 2008

We just returned from RCCL's Independence of the Seas which stopped in Costa Maya on December 24. This is a quaint clean little port. We were the only ship in port. We walked through the cruise port area and purchased our bus tickets to get to Malahula. They took us in large clean modern air conditioned coach for $3 apiece. We were dropped off at Tequila Beach which looked like a fun place.

We proceeded down the beach walkway toward the smaller shops and restaurants. We saw a place that rented Waverunners (sorry don't have any names) which had a banner strung in the palm trees and had yellow Waverunners. We approached one of the guys working there about renting one. He said he would rent one to us for the cheapest amount along the beach, $35 per half hour. My 16 year old was ready to go! It was quite rough the day we were there. They had a guide lead my son out through the reef and he stayed with my son the whole time. My son had the time of his life jumping 4 - 6 foot waves. We own a Waverunner so he is experienced, but we use it on small inland lakes. The guys at this place couldn't have been nicer. We gave them $40, since we didn't expect the guide to stay out there with our son and were grateful he did.

We asked the guys at the waverunner place about fish in the area and he stated that barracuda were right in the water offshore. We didn't plan on going in, as it was rough, but that really made us not want to go in!

Then it started to rain. Soooo, we headed for one of the bars/restaurants that were close by. Again, don't remember a name for the place. It was a beach hut with wooden seat swings at the bar and red plastic tables and chairs. We had beer, shots and mixed drinks (not to many of them though). We also ordered guacamole, salsa and chips. A couple other groups from our ship came in and the place was filled. We had a wonderful time! The food was fantastic! No ill effects later from eating it either! The people that ran the place, again, were the nicest most hospitable group.

We then headed back to the ship ($2 per person by taxi). We didn't shop at all in the cruise port mall, but the stores all looked neat and clean. There was a really nice salt water pool that you could use, and swim up to a bar in it.

Costa Maya was alot of fun and a quaint place to visit. No doubt the people are very, very grateful to have the tourists back and treat them very well. Enjoy!
