Anchorage or Fairbanks?

We are planning our 7 day post cruise tour in August. I am considering two options. Either use Anchorage as our hub to tour from and fly out of Anchorage or work our way from Anchorage to Fairbanks and fly out of Fairbanks? It looks like we could save a chunk of money by staying in Anchorage and just renting a car to travel to Denali and Fairbanks and back to Anchorage. Is Fairbanks worth visiting?

Fairbanks has its own attractions. We really liked the paddlewheel tour.

It depends on your interests, but if I was traveling independently and only had 7 days, Fairbanks wouldn't be on my list. If you have to go through Fairbanks anyway, there are some excellent attractions - the Museum of the North, the Riverboat Discovery, the musk ox and reindeer research station, the Eldorado Mine, the Trans-Alaska pipeline interpretive centre, etc, etc.
