I don't have that map or the book you are referencing, but let see if I can help. If you look at the map in the traditional way, north is the top of the page, Panama runs basically east-west with Costa Rica on the west and Colombia on the east. The Caribbean Sea is on the north coast and the Pacific Ocean is to the south. The Canal runs in a general direction north-south, actually southeast to northwest. Hope this helps.....

Thanks for trying to help. I thought I had a pretty good map in my mind, but the map I am referring to shows Panama City on the right side of the page and the Gatun Locks on the left side. Isn't that backwards?

I guess this is one place where a picture (the map) would be worth a 1000 words. They may have taken a few liberties with the foldout to make it work for placement in the book. Just for a reference Panama City is about 50 miles from Gatun Locks and Cristobal/Colon is about 12 miles from Gatun Locks.
