Port of Miami Car Rental

Which location should I use for renting a car at the Port of Miami? We are then flying out of FLL and I am aware there will probably be a rental fee. I wasn't sure which location to pick when renting the car. Are there any companies that have shuttles that will pick you up from the pier? If not which location is closest to the pier?

I made a few calls looking for a car. However, I didn't call them all. My experience was that the agencies closest to the pier don't offer a shuttle but some of the offices farther away do. I do know for sure that the Avis at the Miami International Airport has a shuttle that will pick you up and drop you off at the Port.

I understand Alamo at MIA and the downtown Hertz branch will also pick you up/drop you up at the port.

Have you done the Avis thing recently? I just called a couple of days ago and was told that neither the Avis at MIA nor the Avis downtown location had a shuttle to the port.

I'm flying into FLL on May 15th and wanted a car pre-cruise and return to POM or closest to it. I just called Alamo, they said they no longer do one way rentals. What a bummer. Still plugging away at this. Will keep you all posted.

I spoke with Alamo car rental this morning, and they do have a shuttle from the port to the rental center at 3355 NW 22ND Street. Alamo's local phone number is 305 633-6076.

I just booked a rental with Avis. If I read correctly, you'll rent from Port of Miami (or the vicinity) and return the car to the FLL airport?

 

Some car companies charge a "one way rental" and/or "drop fee" if you don't return the car to the same place.

 

Some car rentals do not provide a shuttle from POM to their rental location.

 

Being in the same situation as yourself, I considered these points and went with Avis. Avis was the cheapest, and did not charge a rental drop fee. However, there is no shuttle from POM to the Avis location. I am renting from MIA and dropping it at FLL later in the day. And then flying out of MIA.

 

Tip: I searched the boards here and found a rental code and used that to help keep the rental cost down.

I have been checking all the companies for prices. For our date March 29th - the Avis POM location says it has no cars available. Do the other car companies take you back to the airport or do some take you to a downtown location. We would prefer not to go all the way to the airport to pick up the car.

I actually went with an MIA rental since no cars were available at POM, through AVIS.

 

I even took the extra step of calling AVIS after setting up the reservation and the person I spoke with confirmed that I would be better off renting from MIA, versus POM - but I would have to arrange my own transit from POM to MIA.

Thank you for this! I decided to switch my reservation to Alamo after speaking to their rep at MIA. She said that the free shuttle to the port leaves every 30-45 minutes between 8:00 and 3:00. (FYI I was able to get a great price using http://www.rentalcarmomma.com, plus combined it with an upgrade coupon from Alamo's website.)

The taxi from POM to MIA will be significantly lower than it is to the Avis rental spots!

I just rented with Avis from MIA to FLL using the costco codes on their website. There were a few other I had found online that would have saved about $5-6 more - but i didn't know what the codes were for and didn't want to take the chance for just a few dollars savings. We will take a cab from POM to MIA and then pick up the car at Avis.
