shuttle/taxi/or car rental?

We are a family of 4 who need to go from Miami to Fort Lauderdale. Our flight from FLL is not until 4PM so we would not need to be to the airport until about 2:30 or so. What time would we get of the ship(Majesty) and would it be wise to take a taxi, shuttle, or rent a car? Also, is there car rental at or by the port or do I have to get to Miami airport to rent?

Your cheapest option would probably be the rental car. If you want to do some touring before you go to the airport, this is your best bet. You will need to get a shuttle to a car rental office (there's a list somewhere here I think of Miami offices with shuttles from the port), so you need to decide if you really have time for all this. If you just want to go straight to the airport, the taxi would probably be your simplest option, and would probably run you $70-80. A shuttle would probably be as much or more for 4 people.
