My father in law will not go on a cruise he doesn't think it will be fun or something:confused: or I actually thinks he thinks the boat will crash or he will fall overboard lol. But anyways I know I can talk him into it because I have before but things fell thru and we wern't able to go on that cruise! But if you all could tell me some reason why you would go on a cruise and what your experience on your first cruise was like it would be great help! I've told him how great it was myself but im thinking if maybe I show him what some other people are saying about it maybe he will believe me!

I use to cruise taking my son and one of his friends as my husband never wanted to go. He said he didn't think it would be fun and what would you do. Anyway a few years ago my sister talked him into going on a cruise with her and her husband and me. He is hooked now and loves to cruise.

Falling overboard would be pretty hard to do. The rails are quite high and you would have to be awfully drunk and out of your mind or wanting to commit suicide to get over those rails.

Tell him he can do as much or as little as he wants to. My favorite thing to do is go to Lido deck, get fries and soft serve and sit on the balcony looking out to sea. Sea days are my favorite. It's pretty hard to crash into something in that big ocean.

I sure hope he changes his mind. It's the only vacation we like to take. Only unpacking once and total chill time.

Good luck convincing him!

My hubby cruised once and never again. Didn't hate it, but didn't like it much either. To each his own...I now have 18 under my lifejacket, with one more scheduled in 2009. :)

As for my Daddy...I begged him for 20 years to cruise. He did for the first time in 2006 and now I can hardly get out of the house without him. Be careful what you wish for...:D

I talked my father in law into going on a cruise last summer. He's a stubborn old man and here were my selling points:

Food: Lots of food, day & night, all of great quality. Not to mention that each meal can be as fancy or casual as you like. And the meals are unlimited so if you want to eat 2x a day or 5x a day, it's up to you.

Entertainment: The cruiseline goes out of their way to make sure that you're enjoying yourself from the minute you wake up until you go to bed. They give you a list of activities that you can participate in & they're all included.

Value for Money: Add the amount of money you would spend to stay in a beautiful hotel for a week, add 3 meals a day to that tab (including appetizers, salads, entrees & desserts), then include show tickets for comedians, etc. And then on top of that, add car rental fees, cab-fares, etc. and the cost well exceeds a cruise. Also, if you like to drink, no worries on getting back from a restaurant to your hotel- you're already there when you're on the ship.

Ports of Call: You'd have to take 3 or 4 separate trips to see the ports of call that you see when you're on a cruise.

Hope this helps.

he doesn't know what he's missing

a) you get ready for bed every night & it's already turned down for you

b) you get up every morning & don't have to make the bed

c) you get to sleep as little or as long as you like.....with no interruptions

d) no matter what time it is you can eat.......in bed if you like (24 hour room service)

e) you could play cards in the casino and walk out way richer than you walked in

f) you get to see several different ports and do as little or as much as you like in each port and only un-pack once

g) you don't have to worry about drinking & driving

h) there's nightly entertainment at no extra charge

i) where else can you get dinner & dancing (if you desire) while making new friends and be "home" at the same time?

j) not to mention the activities- hairy chest contest, the spa, the gym, hottubs, all kinds of trivia contests, bingo, casino, shows (comedy, broadway style, the legends show, live entertainment), cocktail parties (free booze), depending on the ship there are outdoor big screens, sportsbars, mini-golf, basketball, a walking/running track, or.....just laying back in a lounge chair with a bucket of beer on ice, and relaxing enjoying good times with friends & family. Lots of pics in my signature, just click on a cruise to see what all you are missing!

It's a lot of bang for the buck, and it can be as much or as little as you make it. What's not to love? Go for it, you'll be glad you did!:)

What are you waiting for ???

I love cruising and I'm lucky my DH does, too. However, my father-in-law and mother-in-law went on the FIL's first cruise a couple of years ago. It was a HUGE mistake. He hated it and had a terrible attitude about it. His major complaint was about being "stuck." And they were on RCL's largest ship at the time!! I shouldn't go into too much detail, because it is personal, but let's just say that the marriage suffered as a result of this cruise (though things are fine now!!). My FIL in is NOT a people person, sees faults in most waiters/service people, is very sarcastic/cynical, and just opinionated. Some people just aren't meant to cruise, and they are sticking to land-based vacations and my MIL cruises with girls only these days!

So, my word of advice is to be careful! If your FIL is anything like mine, then you don't want him to come! :p

It took almost 10 years to get my father on a cruise. Everyone else in the family wanted to go, but he was against it, fearing boredom and being stuck on a ship. Finally I got them to try it after giving them a cruise for Christmas. I originally booked them on the Elation, which was sailing out of Port Canaveral at the time, but after getting all excited about it and doing lots of research on Cruise Critic, they decided to cancel the Elation cruise and use the money toward a 7-night Eastern Caribbean on the Caribbean Princess instead. That was in May '07 and they did another 4-night on the Caribbean Princess in April '08

Needless to say both of them are addicted, and my father now wants to pass up Disney (his previous favorite vacation, visiting almost 20 times over 14 years) to take more cruises.

I gave them Carnival and Royal Caribbean gift certificates this year trying to convince them to try something new, although they are still tempted to go back to Princess. Right now it looks like they are going to try for the April 2 sailing on Navigator of the Seas to try Royal and a September or October sailing on Carnival Legend or Carnival Valor to try Carnival. So far their only objection to Carnival is the lack of fleet-wide open dining. They are also putting off the Royal Caribbean booking until the last minute because they have heard that RCCL food doesn't stand up to Carnival in quality and they are afraid of the nickel-and-diming that RCCL seems to be doing.

As a Carnival loyalist, I am trying to sell them on becoming repeat Carnival cruisers, but only time will tell. If they take the April Navigator of the Seas sailing, I may join them as well for my 1st RCCL experience.

Good advice. We all know an "enemy of fun" and it sure isn't my job to make him/her happy. When you can see the "no sale" sign on their face...move on.

Don't try to force him to go. From experience: I talked about my love of cruising for years, finally convincing my son and girlfriend and another couple to go. The other couple and gf loved it. My son did not. He didn't hate it, just said it wasn't his cuppa tea. He enjoyed the ports where he rented jeeps. That was about it.

He has a 52' Hatteras and loves being on the water...said he felt confined on the ship on sea days.

He'll never cruise again, but isn't a grumbler. Just said he'll fly to islands he wants to visit....but no more cruises.
