I paid my cruise in cad... I bought a 25 OBC 3 days ago and on my master card charged 25 cad.... So what you say about use is not true.

That's interesting. They did it the way I described when I bought OBC in March. Did you book your cruise earlier when the $Can was closer to par?

I booked at the end of April... Didn't even know what the rate was between my TA and NCL. U till recently I feel our rate was 1.12? We also recently bought dinner online.... I heard teppanyaki is 25 U.S... We pay 30 each...... So now I am confuse about our OBC..... What currency would my OBC be?

I am guessing you are new here, as many people have indicated over the past few months they had no problems.

Even so, assume you are not planning to spend any money on drinks, meals, tours, photos, gifts that would eat up the $250 anyways?

When NCL cancelled our cruise last week and offered us a 100$ on-board credit they added a disclaimer saying that it could be used for anything excluding service charges.

I think it would be great though if NCL OBC could be used for the DSC now, as I never really understood the previous policy. I missed the discussion on here so I didn't realize that they had made that change. Is it on NCL's website officially? Perhaps the different departments in Miami just haven't caught up to each other yet.

The post you quoted is 6 years old. Current policy is if you buy OBC, you can use it for anything. If you get OBC from NCL in a promo, it cannot be used for DSC.

Wow how did I miss that, I feel rather stupid. I just saw the post on here and somehow missed the part where the dates jumped from 2009 to 2015. I just thought it was a new change with DelRio or something. Oops!

This thread has me thoroughly confused.

We booked in CAD through our TA in Ontario (even though we live in VA right now) back in March 2015.

When I go through my account on MyNCL, OBC certificates (an all other items such as excursions, spa certificates, etc) available for purchase are in CAD.

We will be using our CAD Visa card for our onboard accounts. Will the accounts be in USD or CAD? Our dollar is crap right now. I think my bank rate on my cc is around 1.40 at the moment. If it is in USD, and I buy $100CAD OBC, would it equal $100 or only $60 USD?

I'm just trying to figure out how to stretch our budgeted $$ to get the most bang for bucks. Fortunately we have the UBP, but I'm trying to decide if I should pre purchase OBC or just wait till we are on ship and pre-authorize $XX my Canadian cc.

If you pre-pay for OBC BEFORE YOU SAIL it will be charged to your CAD CC at the same rate you booked your cruise (through your CDN TA) up to a total for the cabin of $1,000. You can also pre-pay gratuities before sailing at the same lower rate. For us, this was at par.

You could even cash out a portion of OBC at the casino to use onshore (+3% convenience fee).

If you wait and charge your gratuities or onboard purchases while ON the cruise, the account is in USD and it will be charged at the current exchange rate to your CAD VISA. So, if you charge $100US to your onboard account after you sail and settle with your CAD CC, you will pay $140 (or the current equivalent). If you had purchased OBC at 1.10 (whatever your locked-in cruise rate was in March 2015), then your $100 OBC would cost you $110 as opposed to $140.

Depending on your locked-in rate and how much you spend onboard, this could translate into quite the significant savings.

Thank you!!

I've sent an inquiry to my TA to find out our rate.

I did purchase a $100 OBC certificate as a test. Once the payment is posted to my cc account I'll check my banking to see what we were actually charged...though, I'm starting to think we might be at par. (YAY!) If so, I'll be maxing out on OBC pre purchases. Either way, I'm quite sure we'll be saving money as the CAD/USD exchange rate was much much better a year ago.
