EmJakeBubbie Posted May 6, 2009 #1 Share Posted May 6, 2009 having been there/done that, we wonder what the feasibility of a car rental might be, for Juneau. Specifically, if you rented a car in Juneau, how and where did you pick up/turn in the car, and were there any xtra expenses beyond just the car rental to consider. We know the car rental in Skagway is easy and convenient and well worth the rental to drive out to Emerald Lake, but it's Juneau that is presenting a challenge. Your sharing is most appreciated. neecee23 Posted May 7, 2009 #2 Share Posted May 7, 2009 We rented a car from Rent A Wreck after reading about it on this board. They are the only car rental company that will pick you up from the dock, all the companies are at the airport and you would have to cab it there to pick up a car from the others. RAW does pick you up and you can leave it at a parking garage at the dock for an extra $15 fee. We paid $79, including the extra fee, for a full size car. We ended up with a minivan which was perfect for the 5 of us. This option worked out great for us.
EmJakeBubbie Posted May 7, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted May 7, 2009 this is the info we need, and I do hope that maybe some other posters may add their personal comments. Thank you, neecee23, for response. I will add one more question: - did you drive anywhere or see anything that made the day special (something like maybe would not have been offered with a standard tour?) Budget Queen Posted May 7, 2009 #4 Share Posted May 7, 2009 You need to do your homework, head to your library and take out Fodor's Alaska, Frommer's Alaska. In both is information about Juneau. A car is not a good idea for downtown touring. You can drive to many places, Hatchery, Glacier Gardens, Mendenhall glacier visitor center, Chapel on the Lake, St. Thersa's shrine, Douglas Island. All along the way is hiking etc, Walmart too. etc etc etc
