Schwerin and Lubeck for the day

Recommended Posts

We will be arriving in Warnamunde Saturday, August 22 on the Emerald Princess and wanting to visit Schwerin and possibly Lubeck for the day. The ship is in port from 8am to 10pm.

We would love to see Lubeck as it is a UNESCO city, but Schwerin with its castle and the National Garden show sounds equally fantastic.

Would love detailed information for taking the train to both locations. What is the cost for two adults for the train?

Would we be pushing it by trying to see both locations? Since it will be a Saturday in August I am concerned the Garden Show may be very very crowded.

We are comfortable driving in Germany, would renting a car be a better option for us?

A car would be the best to give you full flexibility.

Here are the instructions to rent a car in Warnemünde:

http://heinbloed-cruiseguides.blogspot.com/2009/01/warnemnde-germany-car-rental.html

You can be by 10.30/11.00 hrs in Lübeck.

If you move around 14.00 hrs from Lübeck to Schwerin you can be there around 15.00 hrs.

http://heinbloed-cruiseguides.blogspot.com/2009/05/schwerin-germany-buga-2009.html

If you start here around 19.00 hrs you wil be perfectly back in Warnemünde to fill up the car and have a little extra time for the worse case.

It can be a little more crowded on the routes than normal as in three German States the school vacation terminate. But all three are smaller ones.

The alternative would be the train which will be a total cost of 26.00 EUR for 5 of you. So if you owe someone onboard some drinks you can invite three of them for a free of charge shore excursion as I will not cost you one cent more.

Frankly spoken: the arrival and departure times of EMERALD PRINCESS does not fit very much to the train's schedule this day.

There will be a connection at 08.37 hrs but I am not sure if you can make it with an arrival at 08.00 hrs so early to the train station, buying the ticket etc.

http://heinbloed-cruiseguides.blogspot.com/2009/05/lubeck-germany-walking-parking-and-ship.html

If you can make it you can be in Schwerin around 10.00 and stay there for about 4 hours and later have 2 hours for Lübeck.

If you have your own car you have more the flexibility to decide when and where to go. So if you do not mind: take the car - although the ticket price of 26.00 EUR is unbeatable.

Is a lander ticket valid on Sunday, July 12 from Warnemunde to Schwerin for the day? Can we get off in Rostock on the way back and then connect later to Warnemunde to catch the Norwegian Jewel? This was copied from the lander ticket website. I am confused because it says MOST tickets??? Is this the correct type of local train??

Travel in the Bundesland (federal state) of your choice. Most Länder-Tickets are valid also on Saturday and Sunday. They are valid from Monday to Friday for one day of your choice from 9 a.m. until 3 a.m. of the following day (on bank holidays for the whole day). Some tickets can also be used for nighttime travel, they are valid from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. the next morning.

For up to 5 persons traveling together or for parents (or one parent or grandparent) traveling with any number of their children or grandchildren under 15. The ticket is only valid for one day in 2nd class.

It can be used on all local trains (Interregio-Express, Regional-Express, Regionalbahn, S-Bahn) and the entire transport system of the Verkehrsverbünde. In some Bundesländer you can buy a supplement of 13 EUR to be able to take IR- or D-trains. Tariffs, terms and conditons can vary.

I pointed out the items which apply to you in red.

You are overinformed and now you are confused.

Therefore to all others: please ignore this posting.

But let's go point for point:

In Germany the local traffic is on expense of single Federal States.

I. e. they order the train and pay for. If they are lucky they get the train full and it's business but mostly it is not cost covering.

That's why get Ländertickets as Group Day Passes for the Single States.

1. Länderticket would be right ticket to get to Schwerin for a Day if you do not use the long-distance-train connection (IC-trains) but only Commuter Train (S-Bahn) and Regional trains (here RE für Regional Express).

2. You can get off in Rostock as it is a Day Pass BUT you cannot use it for the tram.

3. For you is only important that Länderticket Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Group Day Pass for the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania) works also on a Sunday.

4. It's not available for Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania. Only in Baden-Württemberg (South Western Part of Germany alongside of French and Suisse border incl. Heidelberg and Stuttgart) or Bavaria or Brandenburg-Berlin - and now before other comes why I did not recommend to buy Brandenburg-Berlin at night:

a) most of you starts at 16.43 hrs from Berlin back to Rostock and the ticket becomes valid at 18.00 hrs.

b) most of you want to use the ticket from arrival to departure from Berlin as Group Day-Pass in the public transport for Berlin.

5. For Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania there is also a Single version available: 18.00 EUR. Same in Brandenburg-Berlin and some other states.

6. For Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania there is also a 1st Class version avaialable: 28.00 EUR (Single) / 48.00 EUR (Group) and Brandenburg-Berlin.

7. Verkehrsverbünde are an integrated traffic system incl. local transports. There are only two in the area of the Länderticket: Rostock and Hamburg. Rostock does not allow you to take tram and buses. But Hamburg. Officially it's not allowed to use the ticket later from Rostock back to Warnemünde as the origin of this journey must be outside the Rostock Verkehrsverbund. But nobody will ask this. You can just say that you are coming from Schwerin when you get in a ticket check from Rostock to Warnemünde. As Rostock local transport is no part of the Länderticket you need to buy seperate tickets for the tram to get to the city center. Schwerin does not have a integrated system and you have to pay anyway for the tram seperately.

8. There are no Long-Distance-Trains of the categories InterRegio (IR) or Express-Trains (D) on the route to Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania does not offer this.

9. The Terms and Conditions sector would have tell you this point by point.

So you see: reading too much does not make cleverer...

Sometimes it's easier just to read what is already written here in the forum and not to get overinformed.

But the most important thing obviously you have not found:

against presentation of the Länderticket you get discount on National Garden Festival: 1 EUR per adult ticket.

can you please give us detailed train schedule for Saturday August 22. 8am to 10 pm

What time will we return to Warnemunde?

thank so very very much

dep 08.37 hrs at platform 2 in Warnemünde - S1/S2 towards Rostock Hbf (Central Station)

arr 08.58 hrs at platform 1 in Rostock Hbf

change to

dep 09.07 hrs at platform 6 in Rostock Hbf - RE 33006 towards Hamburg Hbf

arr 10.04 hrs at platform * in Schwerin Hbf

arr 10.13 hrs at platform * in Schwerin Mitte

continue to Lübeck

dep 13.43 hrs at platform 1 in Schwerin Mitte

dep 13.45 hrs at platform * in Schwerin Hbf - RE 38212 towards Wismar

arr 13.58 hrs at platform 1 in Bad Kleinen

change to

dep 14.02 hrs at platform 3 in Bad Kleinen - RE 21620 towards Kiel Hbf

arr 14.54 hrs at platform 4 in Lübeck Hbf

Return

dep 17.04 hrs at platform 6 in Lübeck Hbf - RE 21627 towards Bad Kleinen

arr 17.55 hrs at platform 3 in Bad Kleinen

change to

dep 18.06 hrs at platform 2 in Bad Kleinen - RE 33015 towards Rostock Hbf

arr 18.52 hrs at platform 6 in Rostock Hbf

change to

dep 19.01 hrs at platform 1 in Rostock Hbf - S1 towards Warnemünde

arr 19.21 hrs at platform 3 in Warnemünde

THE NEXT CONNECTION IS TOO CLOSE TO 21.30 hrs gate closure for your 22.00 hrs departure. 9 minutes from the train station to the cruise terminal. If the trains are scheduled it would work... no risk... no fun... Exactly two hours later.

If you miss the 08.37 hrs connection it will become more or less impossible to do both...

With some time cutting it would be possible as follows:

dep 08.52 hrs at platform 3 in Warnemünde - S1 towards Güstrow

arr 09.46 hrs at platform 4 in Güstrow

change to

dep 10.09 hrs at platform 2 in Güstrow - RE 5302 towards Lübeck Hbf

arr 11.56 hrs at platform 4 in Lübeck Hbf

continue to Schwerin

dep 14.01 hrs at platform 2 in Lübeck Hbf - RE 5313 towards Sczeczin Glowny

arr 14.56 hrs at platform 1 in Bad Kleinen

change to

dep 15.01 hrs at platform 4 in Bad Kleinen - RE 33131 towards Ludwigslust

arr 15.13 hrs at platform * in Schwerin Hbf

arr 15.15 hrs at platform 2 in Schwerin Mitte

Return

dep 17.47 hrs at platform 1 in Schwerin Mitte

dep 17.51 hrs at platform * in Schwerin Hbf - RE 33015 towards Rostock Hbf

change to

dep 19.01 hrs at platform 1 in Rostock Hbf - S1 towards Warnemünde

arr 19.21 hrs at platform 3 in Warnemünde

Here would be an option if you are willing to spend 20 EUR pp extra to return

dep 18.37 hrs at platform * in Schwerin Hbf - IC 2372 towards Stralsund

arr 19.32 hrs at platform * in Rostock Hbf

change to

dep 19.46 hrs at platform 1 in Rostock Hbf - S1 towards Warnemünde

arr 20.06 hrs at platform 4 in Warnemünde

So I would start to use to go this way and decide later in Schwerin if you need extra time there and spend 20.00 EUR extra.

You can also decide on the way on the 08.37 hrs connection on the way to Schwerin to do Lübeck first. Just change in Bad Kleinen to Lübeck. And you can go every hour from Lübeck via Bad Kleinen to Schwerin!!! And in connection with the option to use the long-distance-train back from Schwerin to Warnemünde for 20 EUR extra pp you can get extra time.

If you miss 08.52 hrs connection you better decide for one or the other. It's like 08.37 hrs connection but exactly two hours later. And again in Bad Kleinen you stay in the train for Schwerin or you change there to Lübeck. The return options you see above connections.

You just buy a Group Day Pass for 26.00 EUR at Warnemünde Train Station and subject you do not use the long-distance-train back from Schwerin to Warnemünde you are set for the whole day.

The best would be to smuggle a long ladder by rope on the ship and you leave the rope ladder downwards from an open deck to get to the train station in Warnemünde. It's only a few minutes walk.

Have 26.00 EUR or 30.00 EUR ready and pay in cash at the left machine:

2009WarnemuendeBf15-vi.jpg

Press the button right of "Mecklenburg-Vorpommern-Ticket" and insert 26.00 EUR. That's it.

I assume if we just want to go to Schwerin from Warnemunde we could follow the same schedule. We will be on the Century and be in Warnemunde on July 22. I think we would like to go to Schwerin early and return to Warnemunde just after noon, if possible, to check out Warnemunde.

You can return exactly two hours earlier than shown.

  • 2 months later...

What can I say about Dave? Or more specifically about being a Friend of Dave’s? My husband and I carefully considered the option of traveling from Warnemunde to Berlin for the day during our Baltic cruise, but ended up opting to stay in Warnemunde because of the long travel time. Fortunately my husband found Dave on Cruise Critic at the last minute and we decided to become his “friends.” When our ship docked in Germany we met Dave and embarked on one of the best experiences of our vacation. Because it was late in the season we were fortunate enough to have Dave all to ourselves. He is not only knowledgeable but an American living in Germany with extensive cruising experience. His fluent command of both English and German made us feel very comfortable. Trust me, he knows how to make the best of the limited time in the ports.

I was particularly interested in visiting castles, so Dave guided us through the picturesque towns of Warnemunde and Schwerin while providing extensive background and historical facts. The most salient feature of our day with Dave was the ease of his style. While most travel guides throw a bunch of facts out that we hardly ever remember, Dave managed to encrypt some vivid images of the Mecklenburg region which will stay with us forever. We chatted while we shared cake and coffee in the morning, a glass of wine in the town square, and a delicious traditional lunch while enjoying the charming surroundings. Trust me, we felt like his friends all along, and at the end of the day, felt genuinely sad to leave. We sincerely recommend Dave as your travel guide in this German port.
