There is no way of definately knowing, it can be very rough or as smooth as glass. We travelled to NZ from Aus last december and it was extremely smooth, although several passengers complained how rough it was, i am not sure where they have sailed before. Only a couple of people were ill unlike our previous cruise to the south pacific where it was so rough for the first 4 days you could hardly walk. The weather should be reasonable at that time of the year so smooth seas should be a high probability. Enjoy your cruise. :)

Thanks for the replies. We have done many cruises and had some rough seas but as we are at sea for Christmas day before we arrive in Milford Sound I am hoping it won't be too bad. Wouldn't want to miss my turkey!!

It depends on where the low pressure(if there is one in their summer) is located. We were on the Diamond in 06 in March and the seas were so bad the ship took an extra day to get from Auk to Syd. could only go 7 knts. Damage included losing the ceiling in the casino, tearing off the handrails on the walk deck around the front of the ship, and that big ship bent and flexed so much the terrazo tiles in the pool area all broke loose from the deck. Winds even removed the Diamond princess signs from the stack area. Was three days of Hell, and reminded me of a destroyer, more than a cruise ship. Seas were up to our minisuite level!!!!!

Nothing can be worse than sailing through the tail end of a hurricane as we did on the evening/morning of 9/10Dec 1973 on the old ORIANA. With an 11pm departure, even with stabilizers in full operation we were bouncing around and having a true life on the ocean waves. Mind you at 42,000 tonnes she was able to take the seas without the tiles popping etc considerably smaller than ships the size of the Star, Grand, Diamond, Sapphire etc.

Nothing beats walking along the Promenade Deck with the ocean spray hitting you square on.

Now as to your question...you pays yer money honey and you takes yer chances. Crossing the Tasman is like a high stakes poker game.

Ciao for now!!!
