Palma de Mallorca

We are here from 2pm-midnight on MSC's Fantasia on Aug 27th & wondering if we could just hit the beach, then hang out at some bars/restaurants. How far is the beach & could we get a taxi right at the port or a bus? How much? I see that it's a great port to explore by foot once getting into town. What is there to see? Anybody have any recommendations for restaurants, etc?

MSC run a shuttle bus service for 6 euros return that drops you off on the waterfront accross the road from the cathedral in the city centre.
