Casey2 Posted August 9, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 9, 2009 We are probably going to rent a car in San Juan and drive to the rainforest. Are there guides or guided tours that we get at the rainforest to show us the high points rather than to go wandering around on our own?
RayInPR Posted August 10, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 10, 2009 There are rangers to talk to at each of the visitor centers. They can give you a trail map and explain how to get to some of the trails. The National Forest Service offers rent-a-ranger tours, which are short interpretive walks along Caimitillo Trail. These tours are on a first-come basis, are subject to availability and cost about $5/person. The start-times for these tours can vary throughout the year depending on demand and the availability of a ranger to conduct the tour. Search Google for "el yunque rent-a-ranger" and you'll find some info.
alschmid Posted August 10, 2009 #3 Share Posted August 10, 2009 We rented a car to el yungue last week while we were there pre-cruise. Was no problem following trail on your own if you would like to go that route - we stopped in at the visitor center to get a trail map etc - but think you can skip this and go directly to the trails if you figure out which trail you want to do online. We did big tree to the mina falls and went up one of the towers.
RayInPR Posted August 10, 2009 #4 Share Posted August 10, 2009 We're partial to swimming in the Mameyes River at the end of Angelito Trail (Google search >> "angelito trail swimming") and the Juan Diego Falls (Google search >> "juan diego falls"). We're always practically the only people there.
