Mountain Gal Posted February 9, 2006 #1 Share Posted February 9, 2006 We want to take the Remote Bush Exploration & Brown Bear Search excursion in Icy Strait Point. You can pick a time from 8 in the morning until noon to start. Is early morning better than late morning? Anyone know? Thank you.
wolfie11 Posted February 9, 2006 #2 Share Posted February 9, 2006 If it is a warm, sunny day, earlier is usually better. If looking for bears feeding in the intertidal, low tide is better.
Budget Queen Posted February 10, 2006 #3 Share Posted February 10, 2006 It appears you are looking at a ship excursion??? These are limiting in Hoonah. They use school buses and you only have access at the platforms. I went independent last year. Did some great hiking, berry picking and walked up the side of a stream for bear viewing. Just 4 of us. Yes the guide was armed, but far superior experience compared to on and off a bus at fixed locations. http://teckkoutfitters.com/ The great benefit of dealing direct with the vender is to inquire of their recommended timing. JohnQ Posted February 10, 2006 #4 Share Posted February 10, 2006 This looks a lot like a question and answer that was on the Cruisemates board!!! BQ, so what time did you go out on your private tour and did he recommend that as the best time to go or just most convenient? Thanks.
bearbait Posted February 10, 2006 #5 Share Posted February 10, 2006 Almost always at low tide. Fish run upstream at high tide. Too high for bears to fish. Low tide leaves most of the fish in shallow exposed waters. If your tour is well upstream from the mouth of creek than it varies. I've usually seem more activity in the afternoons and evenings. The exception being that some of the sub-adult bears will try to feed in the mornings when they usually don't have as much competition from the adults. No hard and fast rules. Yes the same, copied. :) I went out in the afternoon, the streams were way outside of the significant tidal changes and at least a couple miles in.
