Le Havre -- what do you think?

We will be in Le Havre next month on a Friday, from 7am - 9pm. I have a car reserved from Hertz for 8am-6pm. We have done the WWII Normandy tour and visited Paris on a land vacation a few years ago. So this time we want to explore some other towns in the area. Since we will have visited the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam earlier in the week we are interested in visiting Au Vers Sur Oise....which would be our furthest point to drive....do you think it's worth the time/travel? From there we are thinking to come back to Giverny and see Monet's property/house, and then on to Rouen. If after all that we have extra time we would stop at Honfleur.

I'd appreciate comments/suggestions from those of you who know the area well!

I'm also wondering if we will encounter toll roads and parking meters? Will I need to have coins with me?

Thanks for your insight and advice!

Since we are also very adventuress in ports we will not be too critical :). But you are talking about an awful lot of driving and you could spend at least 5 hours in your rental car if you do that itinerary. Not sure we would drive to Au Vers Sur Oise on a port day....but then again, if you really want to see that town...... If we were to follow your thinking we would probably go to Giverny (as the furthest point) and then come back through Rouen. This would save you at least an hour of driving. Unless you plan on just rushing through places, seeing Monet's home and stopping at Rouen will probably fill your day. But if you do get back early you might have time for a quick visit to Honfleur. Also keep in mind that you need to get from the port to Hertz and if you walk (both ways) that will use another hour of your day. And finding a taxi for that short haul might be near impossible in the morning.

Giverny is well worth a visit, but can get very crowded. If you are interested in Monet, maybe consider visiting Etretat and Honfleur.

We did Etretat, Fecamp, and Honfleur on our second visit to LeHavre and had a wonderful time. The hike up the cliffs lead to spectacular views.
