There is a great website explaining rates, how to get a taxi, and proper etiquette, etc. Just Google and you'll find a couple good ones with LOTS of advice. Also, friends just got back from Falmouth on same ship we are going on, Liberty of the Seas. They answered our questions and one was same as yours...taxis. They said there are plenty of taxi as you get off the ship, and YES, look for the red plates. My question, we are considering hiring a taxi for the day and going to several places. Anyone know if this is a bad idea; will the driver be willing to follow our agenda and not his (as heard from some cruisers).

We will be cruising to MB in December. Are there busses or taxis close to where you get off the ship?

Three years ago our cruise stopped in MB, we didn't book any excursions but wanted to go to a beach. After getting off the ship and entering the terminal there is an area where you can purchase the Hop on Hop off bus pass. It was $20/person (I think) and paid with my ship card. The bus went to markets, Doctors Cove Beach, Margaritaville and other points of interest (you get a map) we only got off a Doctors Cove, later we walked down to Margaritaville and caught a hop on hop off bus back to the cruise terminal. Thought this was a good deal as we had intended on going to other stops but didn't get there.

http://caribya.com/jamaica/taxis/

"You'll find many types of rides, but all of the official taxis in Jamaica are members of the Jamaican Union of Travellers Association, or JUTA. These are officially licensed cabs and drivers, and their license plates will be red and display "PP" or "PPV," which stand for Public Passenger Vehicle

Although technically all taxis in Jamaica are metered, drivers rarely, if ever, use them. This means you'll want to negotiate the price, and the currency with which you'll pay, before you get into the cab. Metered fares should be posted inside the taxi. You can ask a driver for a copy if you don't see one. When negotiating the price, begin by offering half the price the driver has asked. "

{IME at the ports there is a 'dispatcher' and he will write you a ticket with the 'approved fare' written down ......}
