Rio de Janeiro Excursion

Any recommendations for an excursion in Rio?

We dock at 08:00 and depart at 18:00.

Would prefer a "small" size tour. We are a married couple in our late fifties and would like to take the cable car up Mt. Sugarloaf and maybe see a bit of Rio in comfort and safety.

There's no reason you can't DIY in a taxi in reasonable comfort and safety. The site ipanema dot com gives a good overview of what the city offers, besides the one attraction you mention.

If not, contract with a private tour guide who has a vehicle. Plenty of recommendations on previous threads.

Personally I think the view from Corcovado (the Christ statue) is better than Sugarloaf. You can take the train or a van up.

If you're not sure do a ships tour. It may cost a bit more but every thing is taken care of and you will be with others from the ship. Check the roll call for your cruise there may be some one that is organizing a private tour. What ever you do enjoy.

That would be the strongest incentive not to do so. Might as well stay home and watch the sights on DVD. Cariocas (and Brazilians in general) are so friendly and helpful, it behooves you to encounter a few of them in person while experiencing the charms of their Marvelous City. It could be the high point of your visit.

I agree with you but we are not people who are comfortable trying to arrange things over the internet. We don't mind doing private tours if others do the arranging. As we will be in Rio for carnival next year the parade is a must see. We have been in Rio before & loved it. I just mentioned it in case they felt like we do. We will in any case enjoy our stay there which ever way we go. I did read your post on one of the other threads ref ipanema dot com & will check it out, thank you.
