ozziepost Posted July 2, 2016 #1 Share Posted July 2, 2016 We are staying four nights at a hotel in the Kensington area not far from the Earls court station and then will be going to a hotel in Southampton for a night pre cruise. We are looking at getting the train to Southampton and on our return to the port following our cruise will need to make our way back to Kensington for another two nights post cruise prior to flying home. Is it possible to catch a train to Southampton from Earls court or a nearby station or will we need to go into Waterloo station which I suspect we will probably need to do. Any input on this would be appreciated.
Rare insidecabin Posted July 2, 2016 #2 Share Posted July 2, 2016 Earls court is tube. You could get the national express from Hamersmith(a couple of stops on the tube, probably a bus which will be easier or taxi even easier) the fare is often cheaper from Victoria anyway a few stops the other way or train West Brompton and change at Clapham might be easier to just go to Waterloo and get the megabus tickets for the train good chance the regular fare are cheaper as well. ozziepost Posted July 2, 2016 Author #3 Share Posted July 2, 2016 Many thanks for that getting to Southampton is the only part of the trip I'm still not sure of with our trip only a few weeks away. Cheers.
John Bull Posted July 4, 2016 #4 Share Posted July 4, 2016 (edited) Similar observations to Insidecabin. If you choose to take the train, by pre-booking on the megatrain/megabus website the cost will be around £10 instead of the walk up price of over £40. There are 3 trains per hour, but megatrain tickets are available for only a few of them. Nonetheless there will be 2 or 3 trains that'll fit a cruiser's timescale. You do have to pre-purchase, and your ticket is only good for the time that you select. Megatrain tickets only from Waterloo, you can't board at Clapham Junction with Megatrain tickets - but going via Clapham Junction is a pain anyway. If you choose the National Express bus, they start at Victoria coach station ( just down the road from Victoria train station) and are seriously cheap, again around £10. There's a Nat Express bus stop at Hammersmith, but although it's the same bus and you're boarding it part-way into the journey the price may actually be higher. And since its en-route you'll only have a choice of what seats are empty - mebbe not sitting together, since seats are not allocated. You are strongly advised to pre-book. Southampton train and coach stations are quite close to each other and both have taxi stands, so makes no difference to your choice of train or coach. ozziepost Posted July 5, 2016 Author #5 Share Posted July 5, 2016 I really appreciate everyone's advice about this. Getting to Southampton from London and return to London following our cruise is still something I am working on. The hotel we are staying on in Southampton is within walking distance to the station and bus terminal. In so far as getting the National express bus from Victoria Station can you just walk up and purchase a ticket?
Rare insidecabin Posted July 5, 2016 #6 Share Posted July 5, 2016 (edited) Aug 12 Princess round britain current Coach fares(11th/24th) are £7pp each way(goes up to £15pp) mega bus train 9:39 11th Aug £1 ( yes just £1) for 1 person, 2 people is £8 (both have 50p fee) YOu can walk up forhte coach BUT you risk it being full, no idea how big that risk is never been on a full one yet. John Bull Posted July 5, 2016 #7 Share Posted July 5, 2016 In so far as getting the National express bus from Victoria Station can you just walk up and purchase a ticket? There's no requirement to pre- book, but the buses don't have elastic sides. Only about 50 seats, no standing passengers permitted, the service isn't frequent and no additional buses laid-on. I don't know if walk-up costs more. You are strongly advised to pre-book, though your ticket is only good for the coach time that you select. (Flexibility on that only for departures from airports, for obvious reasons) JB :)
