Cruising on Oasis with adult amputee son.

We just booked the Oasis of the Seas for October 2012 and will be cruising with our adult children and a few of their friends. My 26 year old son is an above knee amputee with damage to his other leg so he is semi ambulatory due to lack of balance. He does use a prosthetic and can walk short distances with two canes or climb stairs with railings. The rest of the time he is in a manual folding wheelchair.

Has anyone that has been on this ship have any recommendations. We are concerned about crowds and trying to get around with the chair. He is a big strong guy and will have no problem wheeling around this large vessel but I am worried about small spaces and crowds.

We are doing the eastern route. Does anyone have any experience with shore excursions on St Thomas or St Maarten. Are there any that that would be suitable.

Also, has anyone used the pools or hot tubs on the ship.

Any suggestions would be helpful. My son is an experienced cruiser but not since his car accident in 2004 so we are a bit worried that he won't have much to do because of his limitations. That god he likes to play blackjack and poker so I'm sure he will frequent the casino.

He should be fine....there are no more "crowds" on this ship than any other. It's designed for the number of passengers! He'll have room to move about..no worries!

Hopefully, you've booked an accessible cabin...that will make life easier for him. As far as ports, do check the "port of call" boards for things that may interest him.

I do believe the main pool has a lift, should he require help into and out of the pool. I don't think the hot tubs have that....but I don't remember.

The casino will be fine for him...

Though I'm not an amputee, I do have a mobility disability due to MS . Use both a rollator and a mobility scooter. Also travel by myself . Was on the Allure last November and I can honestly say that you son will not be for the lack of anything to do. Nor should he have any issues because of his disability.

Have you booked an HC cabin ? It might be easier for him as it can fit the wheelchair without having to fold it up to get it through the door and will have a seat in the shower. If not would suggest checking to see if one is available.

Also ziplining should not be off limits to him. One of my friends who is wheelchair bound was allowed to zipline on the Allure last November .It just took a little advance preparation on the part of the RCCL zipline staff. FYI it was RCCL's zipline staff that encouraged my friend it could be done.

We booked the large 6 person HC family cabin for my son, daughter and their two friends. Fom what I can see, there should be plenty of room and the balcony will be accessible to my son. Thanks for the tip about the zipline. My son used to love hot tubs before his accident so we are hoping he can get himself into a hot tub on the cruise.

Hello,

My husband is disabled but can walk for short distances. We are renting a power scooter for our Eastern Caribbean cruise on the Allure in May. We are using two priviate complanies for excursions in Nassau and St. Thomas:

St. Thomas:

EEE Tours: contact Henry Christopher , email henrychristopher_eeetours@yahoo.com He has vans with lift and is very accomodating to taking you wherever you wish to go.Website on line also

Nassau:

Courteous Transfers and Tours Email courteoustaxibahamas@hotmail.com

Contact is Gerard Lewis.

Very pleasant and accomodating. Vehicles with lifts

web: courteoustaxibahamas.com

We are taking a ships excursion on St. Maarten but since it does not have much walking for my husband we can manage it. I don't know of any private company on St. Maarten.

Good luck

My DH is in a wheelchair but can transfer to a vehicle if no steps are involved. We are booking with Twin Island Excursions in St Martin. They are planning a private wheelchair accessible tour for us next February. We have not toured with them but they got good reviews on Trip Advisor
