lildab Posted January 22, 2008 #1 Share Posted January 22, 2008 I Will Be In Juneau In Mid August For 1 Day While Cruising Alaska. Is It Worth The Cost To Take A Sea Plane To Admiralty Island To View The Bears Or Would My Time And Money Be Spent Better Spent Doing A Whale Excursion Or A Helicopter Flight Over The Glaciers? I Really Want To See Bears On My Trip But At A Cost Of $1200 For 2 Persons I Am Having Trouble Justifying The Costs. Any Insights Would Be Greatly Appreciated. fti Posted January 22, 2008 #2 Share Posted January 22, 2008 Welcome to Cruise Critic! I have considered going to Pack Creek sometime but as you said, it is not cheap. Perhaps you already have this info but I am cutting and pasting it from the link in my signature line. Pack Creek (fly in from Juneau) http://www.fs.fed.us/r10/tongass/districts/admiralty/packcreek/ Vendors who have rights to fly there: http://www.flyalaskaseaplanes.com http://www.airexcursions.com talair@alaska.net http://www.wardair.com http://www.wingsofalaska.com http://www.akdiscovery.com http://www.alaskabyair.com http://www.alaskacharters.com http://www.dolphincharters.com/alaska.htm http://www.alaskahunting.com dennison@ptialaska.net http://www.bluewateradventures.ca/ Mid August is also a possiblity to go bear watching from Ketchikan to Anan Creek. Have you thought of that? Not sure if you will be in Ketchikan or not. The permits are cheaper ($10 vs. $50 for Pack Creek). Still about $800-$1000 for two people. Anan Creek: http://www.fs.fed.us/r10/tongass/recreation/wildlife_viewing/ananobservatory.shtml https://wwwnotes.fs.fed.us/r10/tongass/r10_anan_reservations.nsf/Calendar?OpenForm – Anan Bay calendar https://wwwnotes.fs.fed.us/r10/tongass/r10_anan_reservations.nsf/RequestProcessInfo?OpenForm – permit request process I am going to Anan in July - slightly on the early side of peak season there but I will be there for 3 days/2 nights not just a few hours so I am comfortable with that. Plus, my cost for 3 days is much less than a fly in for bear watching so I am pleased and excited about it. John
Budget Queen Posted January 23, 2008 #3 Share Posted January 23, 2008 In August, in Anan, it is mostly black bears, Pack Creek is browns. I would verify with a vendor- there is one that is consisantly highly recommended, that you are going peak season.
