We are flying to Heathrow and will be cruising from Dover. Do you have any tips and advice for transportation from Heathrow to Dover?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Rick and Diana,

It's not too far from London to Dover, about 100 miles and takes about 2 - 3 hours depending on your method of transport.

Most flights from the USA arrive at Heathrow early morning so if you are sailing the same day it shouldn't be a problem to make an early evening sailing. One thing you do have to factor in is the jet lag.

Public transport can be a bit hit and miss in the UK, if you go by rail don't be shocked if you end up on a bus replacement service. The best advice with public transport is allow yourselves plenty of time. If you do use bus or train you may have to go into London to then go onto Dover.

You may be able to get one way car hire and then the same to return. Try the big car hire companies.

Taxis will be expensive, others may be able to advise you of a reliable company that you can pre-book with a set rate.

Hope this helps

Pete

If you are doing it in 'one hit' (eg not stopping in London for the night), your best bet if watching the pennies is the National Express coach service. This runs from all terminals at LHR (T1,2 & 3 are served by the Central Bus station). You will have to go via Victoria Coach station and switch coaches to the Dover service. It will cost about £21 each and take 4 to 5 hours depending on which service you pick. Your destination will be Dover town centre, not the ferry port (which is different from the cruise port just to confuse you!). Are you stopping in Dover for the night, or straight to the ship? Have a play with http://www.nationalexpress.com/home.aspx and ask any questions afterwards. Trains are an option, but you would have to use the coach or tube into London first. Give us an idea of what you want to do and we can be of more help.

Thanks Simon for your reply! We are debating spending a couple nights either in London or near Heathrow and then going to Dover. If we return to Heathrow we can catch the ship's bus to Dover. Thanks again, Rick & Diana

LHR isn't London, and honestly posters here almost never advises staying near LHR if you're planning to sightsee. Staying in London proper has the added benefit of getting you closer to Dover, as London is between LHR and Dover - thus, doesn't make sense to go back just to get the cruise line's transfer. Best to stay in London a couple of days, then take the train, bus or a private transfer to Dover.

BTW, lots more info here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=233

Yep, Twickenham beat me to it. If you stay in London it is a complete waste of time to go back to LHR to get the cruise bus to Dover. It will be much quicker, easier and cheaper to (probably) get the train, though other options are available. Let us know what you decide and we'll help you out on the best option. (Eg there are at least three train lines that serve Dover, depends where you are in London for the best option).
