The stewards will generally do what we ask (within reason) as they know if they do these extra little niceties it makes our cruise that much better, and when we have a good cruise, then they will get the extra reward for our gratitude.:D

We had our cabin steward bring us shrimp cocktails everyday at 3:00 (he put them in the fridge...yummy). Also traded the welcome aboard champagne for a bottle of red wine.

That is clever and well worth the effort of asking.:D
